For a composer, of course, this is a dream, a sacred lab where the sounds come to you by themselves, where the music arises, where the space itself asks to be heard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSomewhere around 2004, I get my hands on a book in a second-hand shop, a French-Dutch edition of \u003cem\u003eLes Roses\u003c\/em\u003e by \u003cem\u003eRainer Marie Rilke.\u003c\/em\u003e The poet died 1926 in the sanatorium \u003cem\u003eVal-Mont sur Territet\u003c\/em\u003e near \u003cem\u003eMontreux\u003c\/em\u003e from the effects of leukaemia. His permanent residence at that time was \u003cem\u003eMuzot,\u003c\/em\u003e a medieval residential tower in a village just above \u003cem\u003eSierre\u003c\/em\u003e in the Swiss town of \u003cem\u003eRhôneda\u003c\/em\u003e. In 1927, at his request, these poems appear posthumously, symbolizing the rose as a metaphor for so many multifaceted philosophies of life, even Rilke's self-chosen epitaph refers to it: \u003cem\u003eRose, oh reiner Widerspruch, Lust, Niemandes Schlaf zu sein unter soviel Lidern. \u003c\/em\u003eEach and every one of these French poems are gems of purity of thought and poetry, they are transparent, delicately suggestive, tender, gloomy, passionate, angry, intrusive, all human emotions are contained in them. They demand to be set in tone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo my great surprise, to my knowledge, no one has ever done this before. My plan was quickly conceived to start this, but a poem, the poetry, the tone of a poem can't be captured, it has its own nature of tone, you can't deny that, you have to respect that and leave it untouched. A few attempts and many years later I barely set three songs of this cycle to music. Each in itself independent song from this collection has been intuitively chosen by me, but it is not what I am looking for.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2012, due to coincidental circumstances, I gave a lecture in \u003cem\u003eRosario\u003c\/em\u003e in \u003cem\u003eBever\u003c\/em\u003e and in animated conversation with the inspirer of it, \u003cem\u003eJohan Vriens\u003c\/em\u003e, it seems as if after so many years Les Roses has come home. \u003cem\u003eJohan\u003c\/em\u003e invites me in residence to spend a few weeks composing these songs in this beautiful silence. Thus it happened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e1 July 2012 I arrive in this beautiful quiet building. I am allowed to stay in the room where \u003cem\u003eArvo Pärt\u003c\/em\u003e has been staying, the '\u003cem\u003ePärt room\u003c\/em\u003e', which has become my room in the meantime, on the first floor, that leads directly to the concert chapel. This will be my lab for three weeks, twenty-four hours on twenty-four, as the muse will inspire me. The instruments that are there do not lie either: history is palpably present here, a nineteenth century\u003cem\u003e Bösendorfer\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eErard\u003c\/em\u003e are on display, and on the stage the beautiful concert grand piano \u003cem\u003eIbach\u003c\/em\u003e from 1914 with a low F-bass like the concert grand piano \u003cem\u003eBöserdorfers\u003c\/em\u003e of today... warm sounds this instrument produces, it carries away my preference immediately.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scenario is the same almost every day: in the morning having breakfast with the guests at the long table and then going to my grand piano: day two I put myself on this instrument, I look at the text, read it carefully and immediately hit the first bars on the keys...it goes as if by itself. There are days that I composed four songs, other days nothing, but twelve days later, the twelfth of the seventh month of two thousand and twelve, there are seven of us present and the sketches of the cycle are scribbled on paper: a full hour of music in a fortnight time, like a big gutter it came out, incessantly, that's what silence does to a human being, it immediately appeals to your source. It has never happened to me as a composer, the music dictated itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd there is also the immense difference between a modern concert hall and an old restored monastery that breathes its history, it lives more, it invites to be stilled, and when you come to it, you automatically open up to that silence, and then, at that moment, listening to songs that originated in that same space of silence, that's only a 'real' listening experience. One cannot stand any closer to the source: and perhaps silence that has become silence in that way is relevant to the far too hectic person, because if you want to come to Bever, you have to make an effective effort, move away, and gradually the picturesque landscape takes over from you and you come in a different pace, and when you arrive at the church, and quietly walk to \u003cem\u003eRosario,\u003c\/em\u003e you only hear the bell of the tower ringing, you step into the courtyard garden, and stroll into that intense space of silence, and there you come to yourself with the help of \u003cem\u003eRilke\u003c\/em\u003e and the sounds that crystallize his poetry, and that is a unique experience that is commercially untranslatable but offers a form of spirituality that we will all continue to crave. Each tree was planted where roads leading out of the city crossed the curved frontline forming the infamous Ypres Salient of the First World War. This salient stood as a semi-circle around the medieval city from October 1914 to October 1918. During those four years the line moved back and forth several times, but the salient never broke. The trees were planted on the 100th anniversary of the line formation that was the closest to the city centre, and stayed there for the longest period – some 27 months. This so called “small salient” is now recognisable in the landscape through elm trees, trees that were very common before the First World War in the Ypres area. In fact, the word “iep” (for elm) and “Ieper” (the Flemish name of Ypres) are etymologically the same in Flemish. After the war a lot of elms were planted back, but in the 1980s and 1990s most of them died as a result of elm disease. In 2015 a new resistant breed of elms were chosen to become the memorial tree, thus symbolising a double process of loss and resurrection. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen British soldier, poet and composer Ivor Gurney came to the Ypres salient in August 1917, a lot of trees had vanished already. As the British offensive was creeping slowly towards Passchendaele, in an attempt to break the salient, more and more trees got smashed up, as happened to the rest of the countryside. Gurney, who in peace time was an avid walker and lover of the countryside, was shocked by the sight of such utter destruction of life and nature. As a Private with a Machine Gun Company attached to the 2\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003end\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\/5\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eth \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGloucestershire Regiment, he spent weeks watching out over the barren battlefields east of Ypres. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGurney’s poetry is always about his experience and that of his fellow soldiers. In some poems he also explicitly describes the “dreadfulness” of the destroyed landscape. As a composer in those days he was stirred by A.E.Housman’s poem, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn Wenlock Edge\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. This poem, from Housman’s immensely popular cycle \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA Shropshire Lad \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(1896), also uses the image of distressed woods as a symbol for men’s suffering. In Ivor Gurney’s mind, who considered himself a composer first and a poet second, nature and music mingle in a true sense. And in nature trees are a formidable, direct inspiration for his music. In an essay on music he wrote: \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“From poplars has come much: the larch has given grace to thought in many of the smaller forms. The oak has strengthened many, and in the shady chambers of the elm many have found peace.
