The Jeker is the river that runs through Tongeren, the oldest town of Belgium and flows into the Meuse in Maastricht in Holland. Its oldest Celtic name is Yakara. The city council reopened this river and gave it its own place in a renewed landscape architecture in the city of Tongeren, the birthplace of composer Swerts. For this inauguration the city of Tongeren and the organisation Moment therefore also commissioned Swerts to write a work that could be the equivalent of Smetana's Moldau. You could say that this work has become his Pastoral Symphony, in which he also makes use of a wind machine, a female choir and a baritone solo performing Looking Glass River by Robert Louis Stevenson. The work was created in his hometown on 17 September by the Zuidnederlandse Philharmonie conducted by Philipp Pointner. Moment three walks along the river at different times of the year. Swerts also took part in these walks in order to gain inspiration for his new symphony. The YouTube video is a short documentary about the project, in Dutch.
