Although the title of this orchestral piece might suggest that it is a symphonic poem, it remains an absolute piece of music, totally abstract in musical content but nevertheless strongly committed to a narrative manner of expressing musical thoughts. Basically two musical ideas stood for the concept of this work. First, the way how classical composers like \u003ci\u003eBeethoven, Mozart \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eHaydn\u003c\/i\u003e always build up tension in their musical language with means of increasing\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eand decreasing musical sections from 4 to 2 to one bar of music and the other way around strook me when listening to performances of their music. It is a simple principle that I wanted to explore not only in my one way but also and in a conscious way discovering how it would work and into what an extent it might result into building up a great climax in music. Secondly, my experience as a listener when I heard in the \u003cem\u003eMusik Verein\u003c\/em\u003e in October 2015 the \u003cem\u003eVienna Symphonic\u003c\/em\u003e performing Maurice Ravel's \u003ci\u003eBolero\u003c\/i\u003e: what fascinated me then was the real sound of effective orchestration and even more the limitation of the used harmonic material by Ravel. So the compositional question I asked myself in this work was how could I create a huge apogee in a piece of music in combining those two elements: conducting tension by shifting musical sections from 4 to 2 to one-bar sections and on the other hand, utilizing limited chord material, in this case only two chords, namely C major and C sharp minor. It worked out perfectly; only the ending point of the apogee came in, so to speak, too quickly, already after four or five minutes, and I had to find ways to deviate from this result by inserting a much more lyrical, dramatic middle section before returning to the opening idea of starting from scratch, only with a bass drum playing some pulses. Actually, the second time after the middle section, the building up starts over again, but now the sections are shortened into a half, two-bar section instead of a four-bar section so that the tension increases much faster than in the beginning. It resulted in a massive climax and coda in the end. \u003ci\u003e'l'Apogeé\u003c\/i\u003e' should address itself to the imagination of the listener: it has a powerful story to tell, and I have no problem at all whether this leads to different listening experiences at all. Of course, the obvious ones are in the end not just the most famous or most played ones because it’s \u003cem\u003eMozart\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003ePoulenc\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003eMendelssohn,\u003c\/em\u003e that’s an understatement, it is because they are just better than the other existing pieces. I was particularly not impressed by the double concerto of Philip Glass, f.i., nor the older concerto of \u003cem\u003eBruch\u003c\/em\u003e or the much too thick written work of Martinu.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI remember an interview in Paris I did as a student in the eighties with the famous Polish composer \u003cem\u003eWitold Lutoslawsk\u003c\/em\u003ei, who already completed then his piano concerto for Zimmerman, and he was then thinking too of a two-piano concerto, which was, in his point of view, much more interesting because you have two independent sets of pedals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI adore \u003cem\u003ePoulenc\u003c\/em\u003e as a composer. Also, his concerto is very successful, full of colors, rhythm, and interesting treatment of the given two pianos, but in my view, it is much too short as a concerto and rather not chaotic but more rhapsodic in his general all-over form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, deciding how my work would be it very often becomes ‘not that but’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt always starts with ideas about something: in the last years, the large overall form interests me more and more; in fact, how to create a way of manipulating musical events in such a way that the listener gets an experience as a piece of one whole with a very considerable length is what interests me. Of course, in this case not a concerto of two hours but at least a piece where all movements must be related to each other. Further on, you fantasize about titles and characters of movements, like a playful Toccata or Jeu, and the consideration of prolonging the three-movement pattern and so on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll depends of the material you finally opt for: in this case, the whole creation process felt exceptional, as if everything processed itself and the swift pace it was performed at seemed almost out of my own control. In the end, this concerto has a duration of almost 32 minutes, and all movements were sketched in the inner half of four weeks,\u003cem\u003e February 2017.\u003c\/em\u003e It happened during a very common traffic jam when I heard the main theme of Aubade very clearly in my head: I was heading towards my work, and once I arrived, I noted down those first four bars in a roughly drawn piano staff on a course sheet. The \u003cem\u003eCadence\u003c\/em\u003e is composed as the last movement and begins and ends in the same key as 3. Ends and 5 begin and thus become a major part of 3 to 5 as one big movement towards the end; that and this felt like a coincidence and ends in the same key as the concerto starts. It utilizes the \u003cem\u003eMaroma\u003c\/em\u003e-theme and in its middle section improvises material from the \u003cem\u003eBadinerie.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe concerto has five movements: \u003cem\u003eAubade-Badinerie-Soupirs-Cadence-Feu\u003c\/em\u003e. Eventually we decided to start the final assembly back from scratch and compose as if no sketches had been made in advance.
